**The Second Greensboro Chinese Association Chinese School Mathematics Competition**

The Greensboro Chinese Association Chinese School will host its second three-level mathematics competition for its students at elementary school level, middle school level and high school level on Sunday, May 10. The purpose of the GCA Chinese School Mathematics Competition is threefold: (1) to stimulate their interest in learning mathematics; (2) to inspire their curiosity and help them build confidence in solving challenging mathematics problems beyond their school math curricular; and (3) to prepare them for local, state, and national math competitions.

The __elementary school level__ math competition is similar to UK Primary Mathematics Challenge. The 60-minute contest consists of 30 multiple-choice problems which interest 3rd through 5th graders and are primarily focused on pre-algebra arithmetic, number patterns, flat and solid shapes, and some mathematics tricks and games.

The __middle school level__ math competition is similar to MATHCOUNTS. The 60-minute contest consists of 30 multiple-choice problems which challenge 6th through 8th graders?mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills at the top 70% of middle school students. The contest questions cover topics in algebra I, geometry and elementary probability and statistics.

The __high school level__ math competition has a challenge level between AMC 8 and AMC 10. The 60-minute contest consists of 30 multiple-choice problems which challenge 9th through 12th graders?analytical thinking and mathematical problem-solving skills at the top 70% of high school students. The contest questions cover topics on algebra II, trigonometry, pre-calculus, non-calculus based probability and statistics, and elementary number theory.

**Notes**: No calculator is allowed in either level of the math competitions. Please bring your own pencils.

A student may compete at the elementary school level if he/she is a 3rd, 4th or 5th grader during the present academic year. A student may compete in the middle school level if he/she is a 6th, 7th, or 8th grader during the current academic year. A high school student will take the high school level math completion. A 5th grader may opt to take the middle school level math completion. However a 6th grader will not be allowed to take the elementary level math completion. Similarly, an eighth grader may opt to take the high school level math competition. However a ninth grader will not be allowed to take the middle school math competition.

At each level, the first place winner will be awarded with a trophy and top three students will be awarded with medals.
